Lian has concerned herself for years with new arrivals in Amsterdam. Before she founded In My Back Yard in 2017, she dedicated her time to improving the livesof inhabitants of poorly developed detention centres. She acquired a buildingon the Stadhouderskade, where thirty Syrians could make use of a much more humane shelter. Brandpunt dedicated one of their broadcasts to this. The municipality was also very impressed and provided the means for her next idea: boosting integration via neighbourhood groups consisting of locals and newcomers new arrivals. Together with Anya Conkic she managed to establish thirteen of these groups, and told us all about it at our fifth meetup.
